There's no doubt about it, counting the pennies isn't the most exhilarating task on the office moving agenda but it is absolutely essential to stay on top of your finances at this crucial time. Budget management is a case of balancing your income versus expenditure and ensuring that you don't overrun the designated amount. Creating structure is the most important starting point for drawing up a relocation budget as not only will it help you to keep within the reasonable limits of spending, but it will also allow you to break down your moving tasks into clearly defined categories. 

By combining budgeting with organising the minutiae of your move you can kill two birds with one stone. Get to grips with your budget as soon as moving becomes a likely possibility – in order to find your office space you must first know how much you can spend on it. Don't be short sighted when it comes to your budget – rent may increase during your tenure, so plan for longer term factors. It is better to overestimate your expenditure and keep within your means than fall short. Beware of double counting – by placing the same item in two separate categories you can budget for the same thing twice and throw your budget out of kilter. 

Check your budget through with a fine-toothed comb once you are finished and produce at least a second draft of your original estimates. Amendments are likely to happen along the way, so be prepared to change your mind and adjust your allowances accordingly.
