Most offices up and down the country will have some form of flat-pack furniture as part of their office fit-out. Many people are daunted by the tall cardboard box looming at office reception, but you needn’t worry as ready-to-assemble furniture is easy and convenient when put together properly.

Flat-pack was a concept invented by a Swedish draughtsman Gillis Lundgren who broke the legs off a table he needed to fit into his car. He then reassembled the item at home and hey presto, flat-pack was invented! He took his idea in to his employers at IKEA and they have since built an empire on it.

Due to their low transportation costs, flat-pack furniture passes on its savings to the buyer, making it a highly cost effective way of fitting-out your office on a budget.

Usually, the kit will come with a number of flat parts and a bag of loose fastenings. Before you start building, gluing or hammering anything, lay out all the component parts and check that you have everything you need to begin.

Flat-pack needn’t be flimsy and long gone are the days of perilous wobbly shelving. Years of development has ensured that flat-pack furniture will in general last a long time before it requires replacement.
