Harrow Green pack-up Manchester City’s Library for Refurbishment Project
Library receives specialist support from commercial removals and IT relocation firm Harrow Green
With accreditations from the British Association of Removers and the British Institute of Facilities Management amongst others, the team at Harrow Green know just how to tackle the task of moving a business and enabling refurbishment.
When Manchester City Council needed to renovate the Central Library, they knew just who to call on and they put Harrow Green in charge of the relocation of more than a million books. A team of around thirty staff were involved with the move which required the transport and storage of a considerable number of books. Around 4,000 linear metres of archives and an additional 36,000 linear metres of book shelves were moved, requiring high levels of organisation and co-ordination. Staff employed techniques such as labelling and barcoding to ensure that items could be retrieved at any time during the upheaval.
John Lord led the team as manager of the Manchester office and he oversaw the careful process of moving everything from playbills, periodicals, maps, microfilm and tracts to photographs and manuscripts. Harrow Green employed specific knowledge and experience of prior commercial moves to inform their approach and ensure that the rare and valuable materials returned to their refurbished home in perfect condition.
Mr Lord commented: “Some individual items need special handling but, because we have specific methodologies for museums and libraries, and a lot of experience of similar projects, our team knows how to wrap and pack each book or collection safely and securely while ensuring we know exactly where every single item is located.” The move went without a hitch thanks to the professional expertise and tailored relocation services of Harrow Green. Explaining their success, Project Manager Dave Ritchie said: “The secret of a successful move is careful planning and remaining flexible enough to be able to say yes to everything that crops up.”
