IT Relocations - going green
Businesses have a duty of care to dispose of their electrical waste if it cannot be refurbished or re-used
Moving office is the ideal time to de-clutter and dispose of any old or broken IT equipment and telephones. But before you get carried away clearing out those old PCs, remember that there are regulations and directives governing the disposal of electrical equipment.
The European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE) of January 2007 changed the way electronic waste is handled. The WEEE Directive now imposes strict controls on the disposal of electronics. Redundant computers are now defined as hazardous waste, and it can actually be more expensive to dispose of your waste improperly than it would to pay someone to recycle or dispose of it in accordance with the legislation.
Your PC might still have some useful life left in it, in which case, you might want to donate it to charity. But don’t forget to wipe all sensitive data from the hard drives before giving it away.
If you have a lot of heavy, outdated IT equipment, you should speak to IT & Telecoms Consultants who can help you find the best solution for your electrical disposal needs.
