Keeping staff morale intact after an office move
Supporting staff through an office relocation
Many companies eventually outgrow their current office space due to needing more space, moving to a new a new location, or to reduce their costs. A move to a new location or new environment can dislocate staff and lessen their enthusiasm. However, if the move is handled correctly for your staff, the impact of the move can be a very positive one – resulting in a productive, enthusiastic and happy workforce. Here’s some things to consider and action to keep staff morale intact after the office move.
Location plays a key role in how the move will impact your staff and their commute to and from the office. The location also needs to be attractive for staff to work in, so pick a location that has attractive amenities and is easy for most of your staff to get to.
Regular communication with staff will help to ensure that morale stays high throughout the moving office process. Let them know early on about when the move is happening, and state the reasons why. Identify ways to support staff during the transition (new commute plan, transport, parking facilities and training), and give them opportunity to air any concerns or complaints.
Involvement & Collaboration
Make your office move a fun and collaborative experience for staff, and try to get them involved in the new layout and design. They are far more likely to enjoy working in the new office if they have been involved in the outcome. Get feedback from staff about their current office – what they like and don’t like, and what can be improved. Give your staff information about what the new office might look like when the fit-out is complete, what new facilities will be available and what amenities the new location offers. This information will result in excitement and help generate a positive attitude about the move and the benefits it’s going to bring to the business overall.
