The key stages of an IT Relocation
Planning an IT relocation is surely one of the most complex stages of an office move. It therefore requires careful planning, enough preparation and technical know-how in order to execute a smooth transition of your IT equipment and infrastructure. A good place to start is to familiarise yourself with the four key stages of an IT relocation so you can factor these into your overall relocation project plan.
Stage 1 - Review & Plan
First and foremost, you need to review all your IT equipment and decide whether anything needs upgrading or replacing. An office move is the ideal time to do this to avoid further disruption at a later stage. Inventory all your IT equipment to be moved to the new location so that the removals and transfer can be accurately quoted for, and so that the correct IT infrastructure can be installed.
Stage 2 - Site Assessment
The new office will need to be assessed from a technical perspective to see what infrastructure is already in situ and what needs installing. This will include phone points, wi-fi and structured cabling. This is a crucial stage of an IT relocation because without the right cabling and infrastructure, your business will not be able to operate efficiently in the new location.
Stage 3- De-commissioning
When you are at the stage of planning your removals, you will need to factor in some time to properly de-commission all your IT equipment. Computers will need to be properly shut down, and all peripherals (mouse, keyboard, headphones) will need to be clearly labeled and crated. If your company has servers, these will also need to be shut down and moved by a professional IT relocation company.
Stage 4 - IT set-up
As your computers and phones are essential to the running of your business, you will need to make the set up of your IT equipment a priority when arriving at the new location. Ensure you have a systematic test plan to make sure everything is working as it should before staff arrive. So now you know the key stages of an IT relocation, it’s time to start thoroughly planning your migration.
