How to successfully share office space
Office space can be precious, particularly if you have little of it, which is why many of us can be quite territorial when it comes to sharing our desk area. Even though we might not be in the office for long, many of us will subconsciously mark out our work territory and be keen for our work colleagues to respect it.
Many office layouts will allow for a certain amount of hot-desks which can again be the cause of contention between colleagues. If you are considering an office move, it is important to think about how to get the office design right to allow for the optimum peace and harmony amongst staff.
Take away the fear of change
If you are faced with a situation where your staff will need to share office space, it is important to focus on taking away the fear of change, and more importantly the ‘loss of ownership’. Working in a modern office should not be about owning a particular desk but more about people having guaranteed access to a designated work facility where they can successfully get the job done. This could be a desk but it could equally be another area within your office lease space.
Educate your staff on space saving opportunities
Educating your staff on being more business-focussed can be a positive exercise whereby teams can analyse the way they work and identify the right kinds of facilities to enable them to simply get the job done. Offering a wider range of flexible working options for your staff is a key part of helping staff to redesign the way they work. The more flexible you and your staff can be, the more likely it is that the volume of work will ultimately get done.
Introduce flexible hours
For those roles which may require a dedicated desk, it is worth considering allowing the member/s of staff to work more flexible hours which in turn will have an impact on the use of the space. However, more often than not with the introduction of more electronic based processes, many administrative roles can actually be done anywhere, even if the job as a whole cannot.
